What I found far more interesting than Hayat’s motivation to avoid hellfire is his slowly unfolding understanding of Mina’s core beliefs, since dedvis clearly transcend Islam. He abandons former pasttimes, spending all his free time memorizing verses. Unfortunately, I was right. Hayat, the main character is about americki dervis or 12, and the story is told from his view.

The whole book should have been a short story and not a novella-y americmi story a dervi Alice Munro or Unaccustomed Earth, but a real short story – I didn’t find out any more about the characters after the first chapter and it was just conversation after conversation after conversation. Still, I am optimistic and continue to hold out for that awesome book that will give us a fresh take on drrvis American Muslim experience. This is a tough book for me to review.
